Ready to Retire? Here’s Why You Should Do It in Dallas

Whether you’re an area native or choose to move to Dallas to be closer to family, there are many compelling reasons to retire here. It starts with the vibrant lifestyle opportunities the city of Dallas has to offer and continues with the warm and inviting culture found here at CC Young. (The relatively mild winters don’t hurt, either!) If this sounds appealing, keep reading.

One of the first things that comes to mind are the many cultural and entertainment options in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. For sports fans, we have all major professional teams — football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer — along with college athletics, several universities, well-known museums, theaters, and shopping districts. Dallas also has a vibrant dining scene with new restaurants constantly emerging, offering a wide variety of local and ethnic dining options.

When compared to other major metro areas, Dallas is a particularly appealing choice for retirees on a fixed income. Because Texas doesn’t charge state income tax or tax retiree benefits or post-retirement income, there is a lot of tax savings to be realized. Also, there is no sales tax on groceries, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter medications, which helps keep everyday expenses low.

Another advantage we have specifically at CC Young is our location in the desirable Lakewood neighborhood in East Dallas. Being in a residential neighborhood really makes our community feel like home, especially with Lakewood’s rich history and distinct personality. CC Young in Dallas is located on 20 sprawling acres, across the street from beautiful White Rock Lake, which is a popular place for our residents to walk and bike. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is immediately across the lake from us, and it hosts a variety of incredible events, including Senior Thursdays, which we have sponsored for several years.

More broadly, CC Young’s proximity to two major airports, Dallas Love Field and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, one of the top airports in the world based on volume, are 15 and 30 minutes from CC Young, respectively. You can get to the East or West Coast within two to three hours, and as a major airport hub, Dallas has many direct flights to choose from. All of this makes it very convenient for family members and friends to come visit, especially since CC Young retirement community offers guest apartments on campus.

When it comes to access to quality healthcare — an important consideration for older adults — five top-notch hospitals are located nearby: Baylor University Medical Center, Medical City Dallas Hospital, Methodist Dallas Medical Center, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, and UT Southwestern Medical Center. That’s in addition to the primary care physicians available at CC Young’s convenient on-site clinic.

Being a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), we offer the full continuum of care, which allows our residents to continue to live here as their care needs evolve, providing a seamless transition across Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support, and on-campus healthcare services, including Home Healthcare, Private Care, Hospice, Long Term Care, and Rehabilitation and Aquatics Therapy. In other words, whatever the level of support that is needed, our residents never have an interruption of care while living at CC Young retirement community.

More than anything, being at CC Young is all about the feeling of community. There’s a distinct vibe on this campus — it’s unpretentious, warm, and energetic. Residents are very engaged, and they even enjoy being a part of tours and conversations with prospective residents. I’ve heard residents say, “When I came to this campus, I just felt something different.”

That’s also true in terms of social and life enrichment activities. We have a robust monthly calendar of events and classes at The Point & Pavilion, all of which are based on whole-person wellness, as defined by the International Council on Active Aging’s 7 Pillars of Wellness. The concept behind The Point was to create a non-residential building dedicated to being the central point of activity, engagement, and socialization on campus. We offer many events, fitness and education classes, and special interest groups that bring residents from across campus and non-residents together. Additionally, to promote lifelong learning, CC Young partners with The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) through the University of North Texas to offer continuing education classes at The Point.

All of these great opportunities for retirement in Dallas can be paired with your choice of living options at CC Young — in a range of prices and styles. Independent Living residents have their choice of three distinctive residences — The Overlook, The Asbury, and The Thomas. Assisted Living residents can choose between The Hillside and The Vista. Each option not only meets but also enhances where our residents are at this point in their retirement years.
