Aging Artistically: Benefits of the Arts for Older Adults

August 4, 2025 | Arts & Music

By CC Young Staff

At CC Young, creativity isn’t just encouraged—it’s celebrated. For a quarter of a century, the Spirit is Ageless® Art & Writing Contest has honored the artistic voices of older adults, proving that talent and self-expression know no age limit.

Since its launch in 1999, this beloved event has inspired hundreds of seniors to explore painting, sculpture, photography, and writing—sometimes for the very first time. But beyond creative fulfillment, these activities are also linked to stronger brain health, better mental wellbeing, and deeper social connection.

“For 25 years, the Spirit is Ageless Art & Writing Contest has engaged hundreds of artists and writers, rewriting society’s expectations about aging through brushstrokes and words,” says Brian Parman, director of The Point & Pavilion. “We’ve seen people pick up a paintbrush, pen, or camera for the very first time in their 70s or 80s and uncover a whole new side of themselves. This contest is about giving those discoveries a place to shine.”

Creative Aging: A Path to Purpose & Personal Growth

Retirement offers the perfect opportunity to revisit old passions—or explore new ones. Whether you’ve nurtured your creative spirit for decades or you’re just beginning to experiment with artistic expression, engaging in the arts can help seniors feel more fulfilled and connected.

Each contest entry in the Spirit is Ageless exhibition tells a deeply personal story—one shaped by experience, community, and the desire to keep learning.

Judith Banes, a regular participant known for her stained-glass art, recently found a new love: writing. “Writing strengthens your mind and keeps your creativity energized,” she says. “It’s not just good for me—it’s good for every senior. Just because you are over 55, don’t throw in the towel.”

The Science Behind Creative Expression for Seniors

According to the National Endowment for the Arts, creative pursuits help older adults stay more active and engaged. Artistic hobbies can:

  • Support memory, focus & brain flexibility
  • Reduce anxiety, depression & isolation
  • Provide structure, purpose & routine
  • Boost confidence & self-expression
  • Strengthen community connections

These proven benefits make creative aging more than just a trend—it’s an essential part of healthy senior living.
